Don has sold a LOT of cartoons in his career. Each numbered cartoon or illustration on the left side of this Blog is from a DIFFERENT magazine, newspaper, etc. Let's see if we can find out the total number of publications (places) where Don's work has appeared . . . . . (An unnumbered posting is a duplicate publication.)

55. Supermarket News, December 15, 1969

In 1965 Supermarket News was printed by Fairchild Publications, Inc., along with Women's Wear Daily, Footwear News, Home Furnishings Daily and a few other trade newspapers.

Supermarket News was directly responsible for Don meeting his wife Suzy. When Al Capp decided to endorse a soft drink with the name Kikapoo Joy Juice from his Li'l Abner comic strip, he invited members of the National Cartoonists Society to attend an introductory press party at the Plaza Hotel. At that time, Suzy was secretary to the editor of Supermarket News. Among her many duties she wrote a New Products column, so she attended that same press party. Don and Suzy met, and the rest is history . . . or at least a blog.

Don did cartoons for Supermarket News every four weeks during 1969 and 1970. The feature was discontinued after that due to an Eastern Regional issue being dropped and "split runs."

The editor of Supermarket News was Bill Pyle, cousin to the famous World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle. Bill was a smart, funny man. For example, his staff of eight was not allowed to write or even utter the word pile. We did have a heap of laughs though.
