The full title of this publication is
Family Circle ADVANCE NEWS FOR SUPERMARKETERS. Most people probably never thought about it, but when a manufacturer places an ad in a magazine, there is an increased demand for that product. The stores have to be prepared, so how do they know what to stock? By reading ADVANCE NEWS, of course. The cartoon caption contest was a clever way to get the supermarket personnel to open it up.
Don created cartoons for this publication’s contest for about 20 years, starting in 1967. Thanks to all the supermarket employees out there who sent in captions!
In case you’re wondering, the winning caption for the cartoon on the top right was: “Just like everyone else—they get back from vacation and you have to retrain them!”
