156. National Lampoon

Don sold a great number of cartoons to magazines which did not provide the artist with a copy of the printed work. Needless to say, subscriptions to all the markets were out of the question. Local publications that Don visited in person sometimes gave him an entire magazine, and a clipping service provided a lot of clips. However, we have a list of over 100 publications in which Don's cartoons appeared, but no clip to show for the sale. We do, however, have gag slips. These are 3" x 5" papers with a description of the gag, the caption, the gag's author (Don or a gag writer), and sale details.

It is these gag slips that provide us with the needed information for Don to redo missing cartoons. This is one. It originally was drawn by Don in October 1973, sold to National Lampoon in September 1984, and presumably printed sometime shortly thereafter.
