207. North American Precis Syndicate

(Click on drawings to enlarge and read captions.)
North American Precis Syndicate sold fillers to a variety of publications. They paid artists to draw up ideas they provided. These spots could be anything from a single object to a complete scene. Don even drew the caricatures of eight presidents in one spot.

This market was unusual in more ways than one. They paid "by the day." So instead of having a per drawing rate, they paid a flat rate for what they considered a full day's work (eight hours?). It was a rather mysterious system as no two cartoonists, undoubtably, would take the same amount of time to do a drawing. Don was and is a "quick draw", so North American Precis loved him!
