195. Oui

Oui magazine was originally called Lui and was published in France. It was purchased by Playboy Enterprises in 1972 and its name was changed. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oui_(magazine).

Interesting that Oui was more graphic than Playboy, but this cartoon is not very risque - just funny! It was published in the October 1981 issue.

93. Japan Airlines magazine

The magazine in which this spread was printed (July 1975) was for employees of Japan Airlines--as opposed to those on board passenger oriented magazines. Don did cartoons for "jaLaughs" for about a year and a half. Thanks to our friend and retired long-time New York public relations manager for JAL.

A digression

For today we will digress from the tally of publications in which Don's cartoons have appeared over his career. Instead we would like to share our entire household's enthusiasm when the September 2009 issue of Playboy arrived yesterday with Don's cartoon on page 122.

Now if Cleo were a boy cat, you might attribute "his" interest to admiration for Heidi, but Cleo is a spayed female. Could she have a secret desire to appear on Playboy's cover? Perhaps she isn't prepared for the resulting notoriety, but for sure she knows more than we might think. Don't forget the hours spent watching Don draw.

39. McCall's

McCall's was a very popular glossy magazine in the 60s and like others at that time recognized the value of cartoons in its pages, though it never used that volume that some did, namely, of course, Saturday Evening Post. Here's one of the cartoons Don sold to McCall's. It was published sometime in the 60s. (See another cartoon from Saturday Evening Post in the right column.)
